For many families, a summer vacation can be the highlight of an entire year. After spending months commuting to work, helping with homework, chaperoning extracurricular activities, and carpooling for sports teams, having a chance to relax poolside while the kids wear themselves out is much deserved. But before any of that can happen you have to make it through the potential multi-hour drive to reach your destination.
As we all know, the top two phrases kids will repeat throughout the entire trip are:
-“Are we there yet?”
While only the driver can determine the answer to the first question, today for our summer series finale we’ll be going over ideas for kid-friendly road trip snacks. We are still keeping things on the healthier side, however, a road trip isn’t exactly ideal for carrying a lot fresh, whole foods-type items. So while some of these recipes and ideas may not seem like they are “weight watchers worthy”, try to remember that you’re on vacation; let the kids (and yourself) live a little!
- S’Mores Snack Mix
- Mickey Mouse Trail Mix
- Fresh Fruit/Veggies
- Dried Fruit
- Snack Necklace
- Apples Sauce Cups
- Parmesan- Ranch Cheez-It Snack Mix
- Baked Apple Chips
Now, plastic zip bags will work for most of these snacks when dealing them out to older kids. A good brand of zip-style bag will help keep snacks fresher longer; take up less space than bowls or Tupperware containers, and are easy to give out to the kids on an individual basis. For toddler aged and younger, parents may want to consider options that will be easier for them to handle and will result in minimal mess. For example, I own both a spill-proof snack and a set of stackable food/formula dispensers providing options to give my 18 month-old snacks without having to constantly monitor her. While these products may not keep things 100% mess-free, they are easy for her to handle and do prevent major spills from occurring.
So when you’re out on the road with the family heading towards ocean-side bliss, make the decision to bypass constant stops at McDonald's for happy meals and instead create a smorgasbord of your own car-friendly eats. Be safe and enjoy the last days of summer!
